Parks, Recreation, Open Space, and Trails

Imagine it is 2020. You have been the Parks, Recreation Open Space and Trails Czar for 10 years. You are floating high above town in a transparent bubble, taking some friends on a tour to brag about your accomplishments. What do you show them? What are you most proud of?

I really enjoyed discussing this topic today. We really came up with some great ideas that I feel many people would agree on. We brainstormed ideas such as having a community center for teens somewhere in town. A place to hang out, IN TOWN, right now its basically the upstairs of McDonalds when it starts to get cold out. Also, we agreed that we wish there were more community festivals for locals. Instead of all the food and wine during on season but fun, family stuff at parks during the off season. Lastly, i really liked the idea of having more sports recreation opportunities. We really only have high school sports. Thank you for comming in and talking with us all about this issues.

It is 2020 and i brag about all that I have accoplished regauding the Parks and Recreation in town. I tell them that i was able to build a putt putt golf course, a laser tag at the arc, the trails are in clean and safe conditions, there are annual festivals and community get togethers at the parks. Also, Aspen now has an indoor skiing facility for the summer time and there is a full size indoor basketball and teen area in town.

It's 2020 and Aspen is the best place for outdoor activities/recreation. We fly our bubble to the indoor skatepark and the new red brick gymnastics center. Then we fly out to the improved arc, equipped with an awesome ball-pit, laser tag, and a mini golf coarse, all available for an affordable price. Then we fly to the fun festival/carnival in town. We then ditch the bubble and go hang out in the fun teen center. We end our tour watching Transporter 8 on the mountain. FUN!!!

In the discussion from Tuesday, my group was able to both praise current strengths and look into the future as to how to improve. Generally we all agreed that the Parks and Recreation programs are very good. They extend to various areas of Aspen and provide services from hiking trails, feilds, swimming and many other activities.
To expand upon the already successful parks program my group imagined the future aspen. We all agreed that it would be beneficial to the enviorment and character of Aspen to expend and protect as much of the open space and natural land as possible.
Looking into the future with our all powerful abilities we talked about removing the west end and making it a park as well as unused second homes in Starwood and Highlands. Though this is extremely unrealistic, it displays our want for the future to be focused on protecting the wonderful habitat that Aspen encompasses.

I really enjoyed talking about this topic today. I was not really sure that i had a lot to say about the situations with Aspen, but i do and we came up with a lot of ideas. I think that more community events around town in the off season would be a great idea. During the off season there is nothing to do for high school students and we do not like hanging out in town when it is cold outside. FInally i liked the idea of having a place for students to hang out during the winter. A warm, cozy safe place would grab a lot of attention for students and kids.

i enjoyed talking about this topic on thursday. my group had great ideas about local parks and open spaces. people in this town care about the out doors and enjoy it to the fullest. Aspen would not be the aspen it is now without the parks and recreations.

I was really grateful for the opportunity to give my feedback to the community. While we might have been unreasonable in some of our requests I would like to see more indoor facilities such as basketball courts that are open to the public. Also, there really is no where in town were kids can go to just "hang out". If there was some sort of place with a bunch of couches and maybe a T.V i know that it would not go unused. Basically I think that aspen needs more kid friendly events.

I hope that in the future we will still have the same wonderful facili9ties we have today. An extensive trail system complemented by many parks are part of what makes aspen what it is, and in the future i hope that this does not change.

Thank you very much for coming to talk to us Aspen City Planners. This process was overall very fun ane educational. My group came up with ideas such as an implementation of more open space with less development as well as having recycle bins in all fo the parks. We beleived that the trails were very good and that no improvements are necessary for them. Some of the parking for these trails could help out because it is very hard to park at trails like upper Hunter Creek as well as the Ute Trail. With these things implimented, Aspen will become a better place for parks, recreation, open space, and trails.

I was extremely pleased with the way our discussions went involving the park and recreation services available in Aspen today. I am a resident of Snowmass Village, and was glad to include input from my point of view. I believe that some of the more recent additions to the parks and trails in the Aspen/Snowmass area were in fact a bit much, and were overkill that put a bad view towards some of the more traditional trails in the area. Specifically the new "learning center" at the Snowmass Base Village Construction site. I believe that if the town put that money towards creating a center somewhere that did not already have a care center in place (a.k.a. Camp Snowmass/Big Burn Bears) the money would be better spent and the village added to exponentially. Other than that, many of the trails like the government trail and other surrounding areas are well used and maintained.
