If I were to take friends on a tour that have never been here before there are many places that i would show them. First, i would take them up the gondola on Aspen Mountain, then i would show them the mall area and the fountains, walk them along the rio grande trail, take them to the gost town and smuggler mine, take them to eat dinner at the crystal palace and then go out to belly up. I would make sure to take them up the pass and and jump off the punch bowl if they came during the summer time. If it were winter we would do the dog sledding. Depending on what time of the years it is and how old my friends are depsends on what i would show them.
When my friends come to Aspen for the first time, although I am not an expert on the town, I'd show them lots of things. I would show them the Marolt Barn, where my dad recently got remarried. I would show them Maroon Bells, I would bring them up the gondola, and Independence Pass to show them the natural beauty of Aspen. I would take them to the Music School housing and the Music Tent to show them the educational side of Aspen, and finally I would take them to down town Aspen. In town, I would show them our parks, like Herran Park, and the wonderful open spaces of Aspen. I would show them the Crystal Palace, the Wheeler, the Hotel Jerome, and the Ute Building to show them the historic part of Aspen. I would also show them the few brick buildings with paintings on the sides. Although I personally do not know who painted the picutres, or when they were painted, I think they are interesting and show a different side of Aspen. Then, if they asked, I would show them the affluent side of Aspen. AKA Louis Vuitton, Coach, Prada, all the expensive stores, and the restaurants. More than anything though, I would try to press upon them the values that Aspen holds true. They can hear about how the rest of the world thinks Aspen is on VH1 and other shows that show only the rich and wealthy of Aspen. I would try to get them to see that Aspen is a place of skiiers, hippies, and laid back people. Aspen is environmentally friendly, and holds that central. Aspen is about the full package in life. Mind, body, and soul is what I would try to show them through the places I take them. The last thing I would do is bring them to my favorite local places. Although Carl's Pharmacy isn't anyhting special, it has always been there and is one of the few places I feel a local vibe. I would take them to eat at Johnny's, Boogies, and Little Annie's, places I have grown up eatin at. I would also show them the Punch Bowl, and Paradise Corner, all local hotspots.
I actually have a friend from New Jersey, where I grew up, who might come visit Aspen this winter for the first time. There are so many places I would take him to give him an idea of what Aspen is all about. I would take him to all four ski mountains to show the great variety of skiing/snowboarding we have. I would take him all around town, showing him the many shops and restaurants Aspen supplies. I would definitely take him to Paradise Corner and the two street malls. I would show him some of the art galleries, parks (Herron Park, John Denver Park, etc.), hotels, and possibly a concert at Belly Up. If it were summer I would take him up Independence Pass and maybe up towards Ashcroft as well. I would take him on some hikes, such as the Hunter Creek Trail and Smuggler. I would show him some of the old victorian houses and take him up Red Mountain. I would show him the Wheeler Opera House and take him to a movie at the Isis. I would show him the Aspen schools and The Aspen Institute and Music Tent.
If i were to give my friends a tour of Aspen, i would take them through the town and up the backside of the mountain. Our town history has two parts. The old mining town and the more developed center of town. I would take them up to Ashcroft and the Ghost town. I would take them on a jeep ride up Aspen to see the incredible views and some of the old miners houses. In town i would show them the Wheeler Opera House, Jerome and other old buildings. I would also show them some of the locals favorite places to hang out and eat. Paradise Bakery, New York Pizza, Johnnys, Boogies etc... I would also tell them about what makes Aspen well known. Our music school, and the food and wine festival in the summers.
